Summer Reading is here, and kids can sign up beginning Monday, June 29th and ends Saturday, August 8th! Children commit to reading at least ten minutes a day and must register themselves (parents, this one’s on the kids). Every child who signs up goes home with two awesome things: a big manila envelope packed with goodies and a white bag full of surprises. Inside the envelope you’ll find a reading log, stickers, a raffle ticket, and a paper dinosaur. Log each day’s reading with a sticker, and toss your raffle ticket in one of the prize receptacles stationed around the library for a chance to win awesome prizes!
Write your name on your dinosaur and claim your spot on the bulletin board! And keep your eyes peeled for Lonnie, the library’s very own megalodon, who will be lurking somewhere in the building. Hunt him down using the posted clue. If you’re here on June 29, don’t miss the kickoff celebration that evening, with ice cream and dinosaurs. Summer Reading starts now!
This will be our last meeting until September. We’ll have some logic games and STEM toys available to play with. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Come hang out and celebrate the beginning of summer vacation!

Test your design, solve engineering challenges, and discover what makes a bridge strong and stable! Ages 7-14.

Bring your own Nintendo device (DS, Switch) and battle and trade Pokémon or play with others using a local wireless connection. We will also have a Nintendo 64 set up and Mario Kart World on the projector. Registration is requested, bringing your own device is not required to participate.

The Great Dinosaur Discovery Show is an interactive dinosaur-themed variety program that features comedy, magic, audience participation, skill-based stunts, and lots of family fun!
Join us for an Omnipresent Theater original tale about a precocious young girl intent on protecting a lost and frightened creature from people with questionable motives. It’s a story about friendship sure to delight the whole family!
Thrill-seeking young engineers are invited to design and build their own miniature roller coasters! Kids will explore STEM concepts like gravity, motion, and energy as they create tracks and test how well their coaster cars travel. Ages 7-14.

Join us for Chicken Story Time! Enjoy fun chicken-themed tales, plus pet and cuddle sweet, fluffy Silkie chickens—all freshly bathed and diapered! All ages.
Can your structure survive a Jello earthquake? In this hands-on STEM challenge, kids will design and build model structures, then test them on a wobbly Jello “earthquake” platform. Ages 7-14.
Join our children’s staff for a prehistoric adventure as we explore the fascinating world of dinosaurs through crafts, games, and activities. Young explorers will discover fun dinosaur facts, create dino-themed projects, and participate in exciting challenges.

It’s the Gates Public Library’s popular annual t-shirt painting program! All you need to bring is a plain-colored, pre-washed t-shirt to decorate. All other materials will be provided.
Play with your friends on a provided laptop or tablet, and get building! Have your own device? Feel free to bring and play on your own device! Don’t have a Minecraft account? No worries! One will be provided for you on one of our tablets and laptops!
This 90-minute course teaches 8-14 year old participants the skills and techniques necessary to respond to a variety of first aid related emergencies including: bleeding control, choking, burns, care for sprains, strains and breaks and treatment for heat & cold emergencies.

Deb Coller will show you how to create a beautiful watercolor sunflower. No art experience needed. Registration is required and class size is limited to 24 people.
Deb Coller is celebrating 25 years of crafting with a 25-year anniversary crafting extravaganza! This drop-in program is for ages 8 and up, for all those that have enjoyed her craft throughout the years. There will be all kinds of crafts, including watercolor painting.
This year’s theme is “Unearth a Story.” You can choose whatever you want to read, whether they are books from the library or your own personal copies. You can also review Books on CD, MP3s, or e-books.

Here’s How It Works:
You will receive a packet with review cards.
Read books (physical copy or e-book) or listen to audiobooks.
Write a review card for each book you read/listen to and drop your completed cards in the wooden box.
The librarian will draw names each week and the winners will be notified by telephone or e-mail.
At the end of the program we will have our End of Summer Reading Celebration in the Meeting Room on Monday, August 10 at 6:00PM. You will be able to register through our program calendar on our website. During the program there will be a random selection from those in attendance for a chance to win a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card. Registration is required and limited to those who have registered for the Adult Summer Reading Program. Light refreshments will be provided.
Funding for all of our prizes is generously donated by the Friends of the Gates Public Library.
