What do you do at the Gates Public Library?
I am a library clerk in technical services, processing children and teen books. I also work at the circulation desk a few times a week.
What book has changed your life and how?
Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. This is a very thoughtful and insightful book that made me think about life in a different way. My favorite Richard Bach quote is: "The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each others life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof."
What book made the biggest impact on you as a child?
I loved and still love all books by Chris Van Allsburg. My favorite is The Mysteries of Harris Burdick because I loved looking at the illustrations and reading the short descriptions and thinking about my own stories behind the illustrations.
You wake up to find your house is burning down. You only have time to save one object. What is it?
I would rescue my dog first, but I would probably grab my cell phone right after that!
What is your spirit guide animal?
All of the titles under "Staff Recommendations" were selected by Jen.
Thank you to Bob Renehan and Peter Derry for their many years of service and leadership on the Gates Public Library Board. Both Bob and Peter served as board president and were instrumental in getting the new library built.
Congratulations to Jillian, who won a Kindle Fire for completing our survey about library programs! Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback by filling out a survey. All Gates Public Library users can look forward to seeing an improvement on our already popular library programs and special events.
The Gates-Chili Chamber of Commerce raised $10,000 at their 2014 annual golf tournament and dinner auction at Brook Lea Country Club. The proceeds were split between the Friends of the Gates Public Library, the Friends of the Chili Public Library, and the Gates-Chili Chamber of Commerce. Chamber leaders presented each library with a check for $4,453.83. This money will be used to buy the Gates Public Library 11 iPads which will be used in technology instruction classes, programs where children create digital works of art, as well as made available for public use throughout the library. Without the financial support provided by the Gates-Chili Chamber of Commerce, we would not have been able to make these much needed additions to our library's services.
The Gates Public Library and the Chili Public Library will again be the beneficiaries of the Gates-Chili Chamber of Commerce's 2015 golf tournament and dinner auction fundraiser. The date will be August 3rd, 2015 and the event will be held at the Brook Lea County Club. Details on how to purchase tickets will be forthcoming.
The library now has complete Book Club Discussion Kits to borrow! Each kit contains 8 copies of each title (including 3 large print copies) and 8 discussion guides to go along with them. The guides contain discussion questions, information about the author, and a list of similar books for more reading. Everything is kept in one bag, so all your book club needs to do is come pick one up! The kits can be borrowed for up to 8 weeks. The titles we currently have are: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple, Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History, and Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. Come check one of these out, and keep a look out for more titles to be added soon!
Following in the tradition of our popular children and teen take and make crafts, beginning this month adults who visit the Gates Public Library can pick up a free craft to make at home. We provide all the materials. You can find the adult take and make crafts on the staff picks shelf by the new non-fiction. This month we are featuring a clothespin cat for Halloween.
Sign up for our email newsletter, and each month you will receive updates about library news, educational programs, and special special events for children, teens, and adults.
We are excited to announce a new partnership with the Westside YMCA, Gates-Chili School District Continuing Education, the Chili Public Library, Gates Recreation, and Chili Recreation.
Once a month we will be publishing a community newsletter that has upcoming events for people of all ages at various organizations within the Gates-Chili Community.
You can view the newsletter here, and be sure to share it with your friends and neighbors!
