Your financial support helps support library programs and new services for people of all ages.

Checks should be made out to the “Town of Gates Library Board.” All gifts to the library are tax deductible. Donations for materials other than books are possible. Please contact the Library Director or call us at (585) 247-6446 for more information.

Items on this list support the Library’s mission of engaging meaningfully with the community through the offering of various resources, services, and programs. Purchases made from this list help to stretch our funding and fulfill this mission.

Donations of books and other material
Due to limited storage space and staff/volunteer time, the library is only able to accept new or gently used materials. The library accepts no more than 2 small bags of donations from any donor. We prefer books published in the last 10 years, in nearly new condition, but will take older books in nearly new condition.
When in doubt: “If you wouldn’t give it to a friend, please don’t give it to your library.”
The Library accepts:
- Hardcover and paperback books
- Discarded books from other libraries
- Magazines
- DVDs, music CDs, audiobooks on CD (authorized, not ripped copies)
- LP Records & Vinyl Records
- Cassettes
- Games and puzzles
Tax receipts are available upon request.
The Library CANNOT accept:
- Any materials that are musty, dusty, dirty, water-damaged, highlighted, stained, or in poor condition
- Encyclopedias
- Textbooks
- VHS tapes
- Computers, printers, or software
- Bootleg copies/ripped media
The Monroe County Ecopark offers a recycling program for Soft & Hardcover books. Softcover books ARE accepted for recycling curbside and at the ecopark. Hardcover books are NOT recyclable curbside but ARE accepted at the ecopark during regular collections. To recycle hardcover books curbside, cut pages out of the binding.
Without your quality donations, we could not stock the bookstore or book sales with salable items. Sometimes your donations will be added to our library’s shelves if the librarians can use your books to augment the library’s collections. So thank you for thinking about the Friends of Gates Public Library when you wish to downsize your print or non-print materials!
Library Volunteers
The Gates Public Library is now accepting applications for Library Volunteers (15+). With this volunteer program we hope to use the skills of those in our community to help supplement our staff’s efforts in providing the best experience possible when they walk through our doors.
As a volunteer you will be integral in us achieving our mission every day. Each task you complete will support our staff in giving the community everything they deserve in a library. Under the supervision of professional staff you will be tasked with an array of assignments we hope you find meaningful.

Junior Friends
Are you interested in giving back to your library, earning volunteer experience, and making a difference in your community? Join Junior Friends, a volunteer group for youth ages 11-17 who want to be involved in library programs, events, and special projects.
As a Junior Friend, you’ll have the opportunity to share ideas, help with library activities, assist with special events, and contribute to making the library a welcoming place for everyone. It’s a great way to develop leadership skills, meet new friends, and make a positive impact in your community.
