You may have heard of Robert Peary, but do you know the name of the African American explorer who discovered the North Pole with him? How about the name of the first African American woman to enlist in the United States Army?

Now that it is February, the Gates Public Library is excited to celebrate Black History Month! We have assembled an in-house history walk to share information with you about twelve lesser known African Americans who have done incredible things. Twelve stations have been placed on both floors of the library. Each station has three different features. First, there is a picture and short summary of the individual's achievements. With this feature, we encourage you to read more about each person and view historical documents pertaining to his or her achievements. Finally, each station lists the location of the next station. This way, you can make sure you visit all twelve stations!

You can start at any of the twelve stations and work your way through the library. Before you leave, make sure you stop at our atrium display table and leave us a comment about something you learned or were inspired by. This display will be in place throughout the entire month of February.
