Major
Pettigrew’s Last Stand (2010) by
Helen Simonson
Major
Ernest Pettigrew is a retired
widower living a quiet life in
an English village. Mrs. Ali,
the Pakistani shopkeeper in the
village, comes to his aid when
he almost faints. Drawn together
by the loss of their spouses and
their love of literature, their
friendship blossoms, and then
develops into something more.
The disapproval of family
members and friends towards his
relationship with someone they
perceive as a “foreigner, almost
disrupts it. At times poignant,
at times comic, this is a
delightful, gentle read that
will stay with you. |
